Samuel Lightfoot Smedley was born in Edgmont in 1832 to Samuel and Hannah Pennell Smedley, an old Quaker family. Today the area is called Mill Hollow, but that is a relatively recent development. The buildings are long-time residents of Mill Hollow. 18th century inventions jump-started the large-scale manufacturing of cotton and its products. While most of the technology came from England, the cotton came from the Southern states.
